When clients come in to quit smoking, the key is to find out what they want instead. Now, you could say that everyone would want to get healthy, save money, smell better etcetera, rather than walk around smelling like an ashtray and going broke for the privilege of it. That’s probably true, although many clients don’t actually care about the money, while others don’t care about the smell. Most would care about their health. But still, that’s far too vague, on an unconscious level.
Details, Details, Details for Quit Smoking Clients
The unconscious mind – YOUR unconscious mind, is a very individual thing. It is a catalog of every experience you have ever had. The language of the unconscious mind is feelings and urges however, rather than data. So put these together and you’ll understand that your own particular set of motivators is going to be different from the next guy or gal who decided it’s time to quit. The answer is in the detail.
I run my clients through a process whereby their unconscious minds will develop a key, detailed picture of what they want instead of smoking; what that would look and feel like, perhaps even what that would sound like, for them. The way I get to this power symbol, for want of a better phrase, is via a tonne of work to free the unconscious mind of its emotional attachments that lead the client to smoking. So the groundwork is thorough. It needs to be this way or else I would simply be handing the client my version of why they should quit (that’s what hypnosis recordings do). That may work for a small percentage of clients, but the most important reasons you will find to quit smoking, and stay a non-smoker, are your own, specific reasons, expressed in your own particular way.
Using Your Power Symbol
Once you have determined that power symbol, I help you to anchor it. That means that I help you to recall it, on a mental, emotional and physical level, any time you need to be reminded of why you are doing the quit smoking process. An example of such a time might be after dinner when you would have normally gone for a smoke. Anchoring is a fairly simple process – you just have to engage with it. A lot of hypnotherapy is indeed simple, on the surface at least, but the client needs to engage with it. Part of my job is getting you to engage, but the commitment is up to you. That’s why you need to be ready for hypnotherapy.
